MARKETING: POTATO GROWERS GUIDE

Potato Growers Guide

Each year from July through September, Delaware potato growers are busy harvesting Delaware's #1 fresh-market crop. Potatoes have a long history as an important food source, and are still considered by many as a major vegetable crop in Delaware. Today's potato production of between 4000-5000 acres are handled by only 14 Delaware potato farms. The most popular variety produced and packed in Delaware are round whites. Russets, reds and yellow flesh are still grown but on a much smaller scale. Virtually all Delaware potatoes are grower harvested and packed for fresh consumption.

Delaware is blessed with a climate of moderate temperatures and soils, perfect for this healthful crop. Located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic region, our produce is within one day's hauling distance to markets from Florida to Canada.

During the past several years, the market for potatoes has been extremely competitive, supplies have been at an all time high while prices low. However, we are confident that our Delaware potato growers will be around for many years to come.
